RAHMAH - رَحمة

Literally and etymologically: Literally means mercy, compassion, benevolence and loving-tenderness. Etymologically, it derives from the root r-h-m (ر-ح-م) — signifying an all-encompassing, protective compassion and warmth — a root directly shared with the word ar-rahim (the womb). This is also the root of two of the Supreme Names of Allah:

• Ar- Rahmân: Signifying His all-encompassing, universal mercy over all creation

• Ar-Rahîm: Signifying His continuous, specific and intimate mercy toward conscious beings and mu’mins.

As an Islamic Term: The boundless mercy, comprehensive compassion and forgiveness of Allah. It encompasses His favour as manifested in guiding (hidâyah) mankind, forgiving their transgressions and granting ma’nawî preservation to them, along with the continuous bestowal of endless blessings on creation, reaching its ultimate and eternal perfection in the âkhirah. Rahmah is likewise employed directly as a synonym for rain — signifying the life-giving manifestation of the favour of Allah poured upon the parched earth.
