KAFFÂRAH ADH-DHUNÛB - كفّارة للذنوب

Etymology & Literal Meaning: It derives from the root verb k-f-r ( ك ف ر ), which means covering or concealing. Literally means making amends for a fault, wiping away or obliterating.

As an Islamic Term: The ‘ibâdah prescribed by the Sharî‘ah, such as giving sadaqah or observing sawm, performed with the absolute hope of obtaining Allah’s pardon and covering one’s sins. The worldly tribulations, calamities, and illnesses that afflict mu’mins, serving as a merciful means of cleansing their sins, awakening them from ghaflah, purifying them and elevating their ma’nawî degrees, are also considered kaffârah.

Kaffârah adh-Dhunûb (كفارة الذنوب): Dhunûb literally means faults or misdeeds. It is derived from the root dh-n-b ( ذنب ) that refers to the consequences that follow actions. Kaffârah adh-dhunûb is a specific descriptive usage applied to the calamities, trials and illnesses that afflict mu’mins, acknowledging them as a merciful means of forgiveness, purification and the erasure of misdeeds granted by Allah.
